The tabernacle was built from materials that were donated from the children of Israel. After requesting donations, so much was freely given that a commandment was given for them to stop (see Exodus 36:5-7). More than enough was received so as to build the structure according to the commandment of the Lord. The foundation of the tabernacle was made of 100 talents of silver which equals approximately 7,545 lbs. Of all the metal used in the tabernacle, silver accounted for 50%, gold 15%, and bronze 35%. All but 45 lbs of the silver was used to build the foundation.
Silver is a precious metal which has many uses, and it is symbolic that such a valuable offering was used the foundation. Just as Israel gave of their precious goods, the Father gave His most precious ‘good’, in the form of His Son Jesus Christ. The Father gave the Son to serve as the foundation of the Gospel. The Lord is the foundation of justice, and mercy. He is the foundation of that which separates the light from the darkness, the good from the evil, the holy from the unholy. The Lord is the foundation of the way back to the presence of the Father, and the means whereby all people can over come spiritual and physical death. The Lord is the foundation of the means to eternal happiness and everlasting increase.
The scriptures admonish us to build upon the foundation of Jesus Christ. If we desire to be his disciple, then we must follow in his footsteps, seek to act as he would act, seek to speak as he would speak, see to love as he would love. As we do this, we will build upon a foundation which cannot fail.
“…Remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation: that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, ye, his shafts in the whirlwind, ye, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.” ~ Helaman 5:12
I write these things in the name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
